Pear & feta toast… Different, light and delicious! A wonderful vegetarian breakfast dish that remains a firm favourite at our breakfast table.
I have always believed that breakfast should be a leisurely indulgence with an adventurous healthy option. During my career I have been lucky enough to sample many outstanding breakfast dishes and I discovered this particular one whilst visiting Guernsey a few years back.
So what does our ‘Holly Lodge’ version of this wonderful dish consist of? Sliced pear (picked from the garden during the summer months), crumbled feta, a little grated pecorino and walnuts, served on artisan bread toast and drizzled with our local honey; simplistic flavours that work so well together. Who would have thought pear, cheese and honey would harmonise so perfectly?
Here is a teaser for you… What’s the difference between taste and flavour? Well that’s easy isn’t it? No, not really as eating involves all the senses and is one of the most complicated acts that the human body performs. Not convinced? Try taking taking a ginger biscuit, pinch your nose, take a bite and chew, whilst keeping your nose pinched. You’ll notice a sweet taste but little else. Now, release your nose and suddenly you’ll get a rush of the ginger flavour.
So, there is a lot going on when we eat. Add the word “appetising” (using our eyes) into the equation and our brain is then processing a huge amount of information simply just to eat! Enjoy!
